Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr Afrah Al-Zouba met today with UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban to discuss the latest political and humanitarian developments in Yemen, ways to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Yemeni government and UNICEF, and mechanisms for advancing joint humanitarian and development work.<\/p>\n
The meeting reviewed the humanitarian impact of Houthi attacks on international waterways in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, particularly on children and other vulnerable groups. The discussions also addressed restrictions and practices that obstruct the delivery of humanitarian assistance and essential services, including impediments to the delivery of vaccines and routine immunisation to children in Houthi-controlled areas.<\/p>\n
Minister Al-Zouba condemned violations and abuses committed by the Houthi militia against humanitarian workers and United Nations personnel, including the continued detention of a number of UN and humanitarian staff in Sana\u2019a. She stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to secure their release, ensure their safety, and enable them to return to their families and workplaces.<\/p>\n
She underlined that the continued detention of humanitarian workers, along with restrictions on access to vaccines and essential health services, undermines the ability of international organisations to carry out their work, threatens the health and lives of children, and hampers efforts to respond to growing humanitarian needs.<\/p>\n
The Minister called for respect for international humanitarian law, the protection of humanitarian personnel, the removal of restrictions obstructing access to aid, vaccines and essential services, and the safeguarding of humanitarian action from political interference.<\/p>\n
UNICEF officials briefed the Minister on the organization’s programmes, projects and ongoing work in Yemen, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination with the Yemeni government.<\/p>\n
UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban confirmed the organization\u2019s commitment to further developing its cooperation with the government and expanding its field presence to enable more effective access to vulnerable and targeted communities and improve the delivery of essential services.<\/p>\n
He also noted UNICEF\u2019s plans to broaden its field presence by opening additional offices in several governorates, alongside its existing offices in Aden and Marib, in order to strengthen the organisation\u2019s ability to respond to humanitarian and development needs across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
