A joint meeting was held today in the interim capital, Aden, bringing together Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr Afrah Al-Zouba, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Mohammed Al-Faqmi, and representatives of United Nations agencies, international organizations and non-governmental organizations operating in Yemen. The meeting discussed the latest humanitarian developments, the repercussions of the recent escalation by the terrorist Houthi militia, and priorities for the urgent response to the needs of displaced and affected communities.<\/p>\n

Attended by Minister of State Walid Al-Abara and senior officials from both ministries, the meeting reviewed the latest wave of displacement, the growing needs of affected families and host communities, and ways to strengthen coordination between the government, UN agencies and international organizations. It also addressed the need to ensure that relief interventions complement one another and that development programmes continue.<\/p>\n

The Foreign Minister briefed participants on the latest political, security and humanitarian developments, particularly those along the western coast and around Bab al-Mandab, and their impact on civilians and displacement. She noted that threats to ports and supply routes are heightening food-security risks and increasing the cost of essential goods, further exacerbating the economic and humanitarian hardship facing the Yemeni people.<\/p>\n

Minister Al-Zouba reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to fulfilling its constitutional and legal responsibilities to protect civilians and displaced people, safeguard their rights, and uphold the Republic of Yemen\u2019s obligations under international humanitarian law. She stressed that the government would continue working with its partners to facilitate the impartial delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need across all governorates and to create the conditions necessary for organizations to carry out their humanitarian work.<\/p>\n

She explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to bring the suffering of Yemenis to the attention of international decision-makers and to translate political support into practical action that protects people, safeguards their rights and enables state institutions to fulfil their responsibilities. She also stressed the need for political action that addresses the root causes of the suffering and helps prevent the tragedy from recurring.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation presented an overview of urgent humanitarian and development needs, noting that 12,597 displaced families had been registered across six governorates. He said these families urgently require shelter, food, safe water, healthcare and protection services.<\/p>\n

Minister Al-Faqih called for urgent and coordinated international action to mobilise resources and close funding gaps in the humanitarian response. He reaffirmed the Ministry\u2019s commitment to directing interventions according to actual needs and national priorities, strengthening transparency and accountability, and integrating relief efforts with support for livelihoods and early recovery.<\/p>\n

The two ministers emphasized the importance of strengthening the partnership between the government, the United Nations and international organizations, and of expanding their presence and operations from the interim capital, Aden. They said this would facilitate direct coordination with state institutions and enhance the effectiveness, efficiency and continuity of humanitarian and development programmes.<\/p>\n

The Minister of State presented the government\u2019s consolidated report on the latest wave of displacement. He stressed the need for an integrated response based on early warning and preparedness, the protection of displaced people, support for host communities, and the mobilisation of international assistance to help contain further displacement and mitigate its humanitarian consequences.<\/p>\n

Laurent Bukera, Acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, highlighted the severity of the humanitarian situation and the growing needs of displaced communities. He outlined ongoing coordination among agencies and organisations to strengthen preparedness and respond to urgent needs. He also reaffirmed the United Nations\u2019 continued cooperation with the Yemeni government and its commitment to sustaining development work alongside the humanitarian response.<\/p>\n

The meeting also heard contributions from representatives of UN agencies, international organisations and NGOs concerning the challenges facing their operations, priority needs, and ways to strengthen coordination and expand assistance to affected communities.<\/p>\n

Participants stressed the importance of preserving the civilian and impartial nature of humanitarian action, protecting organisations\u2019 premises, vehicles and resources from any use inconsistent with their humanitarian and development mandates, and ensuring a safe environment for humanitarian workers and beneficiaries.<\/p>\n
