Aden – SABA:
His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al‑Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, formally requested UN Secretary‑General António Guterres to support an international effort—through the Security Council—to designate the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization, ensure the enforcement of the arms embargo against it, dry up its sources of financing and armament, and hold its supporters and those responsible for its violations accountable.
This came during a phone call to discuss national developments in light of the terrorist escalation led by the Houthi militia and its implications for international peace and security.
His Excellency briefed the UN Secretary‑General on recent Houthi terrorist activities, including missile and drone attacks on state institutions and civilian facilities, and the expansion of assaults on cities and villages, alongside the ongoing siege of Taiz and shelling of its residential neighborhoods. He highlighted the resulting casualties—thousands of dead and wounded, including civilians and children forced into combat.
The President noted that the Yemeni government has responsibly engaged with initiatives and agreements aimed at ending the war, while the militia responded with escalation, exploiting truces and political efforts to reorganize its ranks and continue its violations, including the ongoing detention of more than seventy UN employees, in addition to the kidnapping of thousands of innocent civilians.
He stressed that the current stage requires the international community to move from condemnation to full implementation of international legitimacy resolutions, emphasizing the need to end the Houthi threat, lift the siege on cities, and open safe routes for civilians and humanitarian and medical supplies.
The President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a just and sustainable peace based on international legitimacy, respect for Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and the restoration of its national institutions.
For his part, the UN Secretary‑General strongly condemned the Houthi attacks inside Yemen and across borders, expressing his rejection of the continued detention of UN staff, public servants, and all violations of international law.
Guterres also affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to providing stronger support to the Yemeni government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confronting all threats.
