Yemen, UN discuss situations of Safir Tanker

The Charge d’ Affairs of Yemen’s Embassy here and the Permanent Representative to UN Environment Program Abdulsalam al-Awadhi discussed Thursday with the Executive Director of the UN Environment Program Angria Anderson situations of Safir tanker swimming on the Red Sea.

In the meeting held through Video Conference, al-Awadhi touched upon letters directed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad al-Hadhrami to the UN Secretary General and to the Security Council on situations of the tanker and possible dangers to the international environment if the tanker exploded because Houthi rejection of allowing UN team to check it up and examine it.

He stressed significance of UN and international community’s pressure on Houthi militia to allow to the team examine the tanker before causing catastrophe hit Yemen and the regional countries.

He renewed government’s keenness to exert all efforts for facilitating arrival of the UN technical team to do maintenance work to the tanker.

For her part, the UN official praised cooperation of the government of Yemen with the technical team, pointing out to the possible catastrophe if the tanker leaks or explodes.

She said she is in continuous communication with the UN Secretary General for finding out quick solutions.
