The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs welcomes the appeal by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV regarding the humanitarian situation in Yemen, particularly in the city of Taiz. The Ministry expresses its appreciation for his concern over the suffering of Yemenis and his call for an end to hostilities and for ensuring the right of Yemenis and the peoples of the region to live in peace. It affirms the importance of this appeal in mobilizing international solidarity and strengthening the sense of responsibility toward those affected.
The Ministry stresses that the continued siege imposed by the Houthi terrorist militia on Taiz, along with the shelling of residential neighborhoods and restrictions on the movement of citizens and supplies, exacerbates the suffering of the population and threatens their means of survival. It emphasizes that responding to this suffering requires lifting the siege, ending attacks on civilians, reopening roads, and ensuring the unhindered delivery of food, water, medicine, and humanitarian assistance.
The Ministry calls on the international community to build on this appeal by taking practical measures to pressure the militia to end the siege and halt its violations, while ensuring the protection of civilians and civilian facilities, supporting the documentation of violations, holding perpetrators accountable, and safeguarding the rights of victims. It affirms that protecting civilians and meeting their basic needs is an obligation under international humanitarian law, and that civilians’ rights to food, water, and medicine must not be subjected to political pressure or blackmail.
The Ministry reaffirms the Yemeni government’s commitment to facilitating humanitarian operations and strengthening coordination with the United Nations and relief organizations, in a manner that ensures assistance reaches those in need and alleviates the suffering of affected populations across all governorates.
